Dayna Hilton, Firefighter and Public Fire and Life Safety Educator for Johnson County RFD #1, was chosen in a nationwide search as the female lead in a production by Oklahoma State University's Fire Protection Publications. OSU, Fire Protection Publications was awarded with a Department of Homeland Security FEMA/USFA Assistance to Firefighter Grants for the past four years. One project, is the development of a comprehensive fire safety curriculum for young children three to five years old was included in each grant. The target for this curriculum and visual supports includes teachers and fire safety educators, however, it will be available to anyone once it is completed.

The video is designed to assist firefighters throughout the United States in conducting developmentally appropriate fire station tours and visits to early childhood classrooms. Young children three to five years old have a keen interest in firefighters, equipment, and apparatus. Children frequently go to fire stations for tours and early childhood educators frequently invite firefighters to visit their classrooms. While firefighters have the best of intentions, their efforts are not always as successful as they wish. These training materials will prepare firefighters in conducting fire station tours and firefighter classroom visits.
A visual support companion video developed to assist the classroom teacher and the public fire safety educator will accompany the curriculum. This video will address two important aspects of fire safety education, the "Firefighter Visit to the Classroom" and when the class goes to the fire station for a "Fire Station Tour".

This video will include an example for both the teacher and the fire department public educator on how to conduct the visit and tour appropriately. The instructional training video for people presenting fire safety education to young children will also be included.
How resulting curriculum and video will be used:

? The Social Studies/Social Development Class in the College of Human Environmental Sciences, Early Childhood Education will use the DVD's as part of the curriculum content of the course

? The DVD's are intended to be part of the International Fire Service Training Association's Essentials of Fire Fighting (5th Edition) instructional materials (as a value added item available at no cost)

? These DVD's are also planned to be used as "just in time" training for any fire department personnel preparing for a classroom visit or to conduct a fire station tour

Filming was held in May of 2007 in Oklahoma and Arkansas. Footage from Arkansas included a fire safety presentation by Firefighter Hilton to Ms. Kelli Grigsby's Kindergarten class at the Clarksville Primary School. Hilton was assisted by RFD #1 Firefighter Michael Post and RFD #1's Fire Safety Dog, Sparkles.

The work of Johnson County RFD #1's Fire Safety Team, which includes the department's firefighters and Fire Corps members, has been recognized nationally with numerous awards and honors. Hilton has appeared on PBS KIDS Sprout and FOX and Friends sharing valuable fire safety messages to help keep adults and fire safe.

Release of the videos is expected to be November 2007. For more information on Johnson County RFD #1's Fire Safety Team, please visit the department's website at www.rfd1.com

Ozarks New Student Orientation 2007
Orientation is required for all first-time college students. Orientation activities will begin on Thursday, August 16th, 2007 and continue through Monday, August 20th, 2007. Residence halls will be open for move-in beginning at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 16th. We have compiled a list of items that we think will help you decide what to bring and what to leave at home. You can register for orientation online, giving you one less thing to do before you arrive on campus. Also, to help guide you through the orientation process, we have created a unique orientation handbook, which is a valuable resource for both parents and new students.
On Monday, August 13, 2007, the new Jones Learning Center students will move on campus prior to the "university-wide orientation" to begin a three-day orientation program called "Jump Start." Their program gives the new JLC students plenty of time to get acquainted with their new surroundings and the resources of the learning center!
We realize that transfer students with over 24 credits who have experienced orientation at another college often feel that their attendance at orientation is not needed; we hope that you are planning to participate fully in orientation. However, we have also created a single day Transfer Student Orientation on Monday, August 20th, in order to facilitate your transition to the University of the Ozarks. This orientation session is only available to students who have 24 transfer credit hours and are not enrolled in the freshman level critical inquiry class.

The U of O PBL once again did an outstanding job at the National Leadership Convention, held in Chicago on June 27.
