Pine Bluff-based Simmons First National Bank turned 100 years old the last week of March. Simmons is the third-largest state chartered bank in Arkansas. It has over $2 billion in assets and 65 bank offices statewide. Dr. John Franklin Simmons and a group of local investors founded the bank on March 23, 1903. On its anniversary, Simmons donated $100,000 to the city of Pine Bluff for construction of a farmers' market.

The 4-way stop at the Intersection of Crawford Street and Highway 109 is no longer a 4-way stop. The Stop signs have been taken down on Highway 109 - traffic moving north and south doesn't stop - so if you are traveling in that area watch closely - it has been a 4-way stop for so long it may take folks awhile to get use to the new system.

Hampton Inn of Clarksville was recognized again at the annual conference in Las Vegas for 2002. They received the Hampton Hotel Pride Award for their #3 ranking in the system. Hilton recognizes the properties with the strongest product and service quality levels. They also won the Connie Award, which they will receive in May in Anaheim, CA, with an all-expense paid trip by the Hilton Corporation. Congratulations to Nancy Rogers, Hampton Inn Manager and Huie & Doris Bird, owners.

Bicentennial Commemoration of the Louisiana Purchase events are going on statewide in 2003. President Thomas Jefferson purchased from France 828,000 square miles of land west of the Mississippi River for $15 Million - roughly 4 cents an acre - in 1803, doubling the size of the United States. Lake Dardanelle is having a Floating Through History on the Arkansas River on May 17 from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. Seating is limited so call in advance to sign up at (479) 967-5516. National Tourism Week
May 10-18

The twentieth annual observance of National Tourism Week will be celebrated nationwide May 10-18, 2003 with National Tourism Day observed on Wednesday, May 14th. National Tourism Week was designated by the Tourism Works for America Council to give communities and the industry a chance to emphasize the economic impact of travel and tourism, as well as to show appreciation to travelers who make it happen.

Again this year, the Arkansas Department of Parks & Tourism (ADPT) is encouraging organizations and communities to join the weeklong celebration. If you are a merchant or business, you can display Tourism Week messages on your marquees to welcome visitors, offer specials and/or refreshments, and wear red to show the size and strength of our tourism industry. The Annual Report from ADPT shows 110,500 visitors with total travel expenditures at $19,495,732 in 2002 for Johnson County.
