In
Brief
Out-going
Chamber Board members that
finished their terms on December
31, 2002 are: Don Johnston,
Jeff Vire, Ken Wood, Cindy
Herron, Betty Smithee and Chris
Graves. The Chamber
appreciates the time and
involvement that each person put
in and would like to say Thank
you.
Secretary's
Day is coming in April and we
would like to know how many of
our members would like us to
continue with the Annual
Secretary's Day Luncheon this
year. The first 2 years we had a
great response but attendance was
down last year with so many other
options for businesses to do for
their employees. Please call the
Chamber office at 754-2340 and
let us know your
opinion.
Clarksville-Johnson
County Directories are
getting in low supply and we will
be updating and reprinting the
2003 addition very soon. All
members that had ads in last
year's edition will have first
option to keep their space and
will be contacted in the next 2
weeks for updates or changes. If
you are a new member and haven't
placed an ad before please let us
know if you are interested in
participating. We will try to
accommodate everyone who would
like to have a presence in the
directory.
The
Johnson County Car & Truck
Club will be having a 2-day
event on May 16 & 17 at the
Church of Christ on Highway 64
West. Saturday will be the swap
meet and if you would like to set
up a booth there are spaces
available for $20 (some
restrictions apply). The car show
will be on the 17th and admission
is free. If you have a vehicle
you want judged, a $10 donation
to the club is required. The
Club's membership is at 41
families and anyone can join for
$15 - you don't even need an
antique car or truck, just
enthusiasm! Call Teddy or Eva
Spurgin - 754-4080, Charles
Groskopf - 497-1972 or Darla
Morgan - 497-1425 for complete
details and/or registration.
The
Arkansas Department of Health
announced a new hotline to help
smokers kick the habit. Tobacco
users can call 1-866-NOWQUIT to
create a personalized treatment
plan and to answer questions
about smoking cessation.
Governor
Huckabee unveiled his legislative
agenda and the overarching
theme of his comments centered on
saving tax dollars to meet
increasing costs for state
services. For the business
community, Huckabee asked the
legislature for new economic
development tools and pushed for
tort reform - HB 1038 would limit
jury awards beyond the court
determined percentage of
responsibility for injury and
focus more on righting wrongs
done to a single individual than
on punishing parent corporations.
The
Western Arkansas Legislative
Gala set for 6:30 p.m. on
Wednesday, February 5th, 2003 at
Rick's Armory in Little Rock has
chambers and communities
throughout Western Arkansas
gearing up for the most important
Regional legislative event of
2003. Held every two years near
the beginning of the Legislative
session, the Gala is known among
many legislators as one of the
best political gatherings during
the session. Chambers and
companies across Northwest
Arkansas including Clarksville
will host state lawmakers and
appointed officials during the
event. The Gala serves as an
opportunity for Western Arkansas
leaders to voice their positions
to those who shape public policy.
More than 600 government and
community leaders are expected to
attend.
