TALKIN' TRASH

As the holiday season approaches, Recycle Works wanted to share some great information with you to help lighten both your spirits and your household waste.

Did you know that Americans throw away 25% more trash during the Thanksgiving to New Year's period than any other time of the year? That amounts to one million extra tons per week, for a grand total of 25 million tons of garbage. There are many ways we can reduce, reuse and recycle through the holidays, and what better way to start than celebrating American Recycles Day on November 15th!

You can start by using your dishes and glassware instead of paper products. Cloth napkins not only add a touch of class to your events, they can be washed, reused and save waste. You can remind your guests to bring reusable dishes for leftovers and start a compost box with food scraps. Are you worried about bugs and odor? If you compost your fruits, veggies along with their peels, pits and seeds - you shouldn't have a problem.

Another great idea is to decorate with holly, cedar, fruits and nuts. They can all be composted after use. Popcorn and cranberries look great on the tree and front door. In addition they are wonderful items to hang outside for the wildlife. Don't forget about the mistletoe!

There are many greeting cards and presents to choose from that are made from recycled materials. You might also try sending electronic greeting cards this year.

And now - presents! Give the best gift of all - your time. Give away services that mean the most to a loved one - read to aging grandparents, take a day trip with your wife, give your husband a backrub or wash and detail your loved ones vehicle. Think about giving gifts that people can use over and over again. You will be amazed at how creative and really personal gifts can be if your mind is set on reusing and recycling. If you have a present to wrap, start saving the comics from the Sunday paper to wrap your gift in. If you receive a present in the mail that contains bubble wrap or foam peanuts, take it to a shipping or mailing store that can reuse it. Think about putting gifts in baskets or tins. Use shredded paper instead of new tissue paper to use as a filler for presents. Be sure to save paper, cards and tissue paper that you get this year to use again next year. Use a live tree (one with a root ball) that can be planted in your yard later.

Better yet - call Abbie Taylor Cox at 479-754-7475 and make a date that she can come to your business and show you how easy it would be to start a recycling program at work and at home.
Visit their web site at www.recycleworks.us. They are growing and changing all the time.
