Home for the Holidays Christmas in Johnson County

The holiday season began on the weekend of November 15th & 16th with the Merchants Christmas Open House where shoppers were not only treated to great sales but also refreshments at most of the local merchants. The shopping and holiday spirit continued with the Annual Early Bird Sale from 7:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. on Friday, November 28th where shoppers were out filling Christmas Wish Lists.

The Christmas Lighting Ceremony was held on Monday, November 24th at 6:30 p.m. on the Court House lawn. The program for the evening, organized by the Leadership Johnson County class, Dorinda Edmisten Chair, Stacey Nowotny & Sherry Boen Co-directors for 2003, included musical entertainment by Christy Sparks & the Forrester Davis Children, Debbie Johnson & Westside High School, and Ralph Johnson & the Lamar Elementary School. County Judge Mike Jacobs, Clarksville Mayor Billy Helms, Knoxville Mayor Glenda Caldwell, Lamar Mayor George Overbey, Jr., and Coal Hill Mayor Deborah Marvel led the crowd in Christmas Carols. The Johnson County Fantastic Clovers sold hot chocolate with the proceeds going to community projects and the U of O Women's Angel Tree Program will receive the proceeds from the popcorn sales. Grand finale for the evening was the countdown to turn on the Holiday Lights at the Spadra Bridge and the Christmas tree at the Court House.

Be sure and come out to the Annual Christmas Parade on Saturday, December 6th at 6:30 p.m. Clarksville Mayor Billy Helms will be the Grand Marshal. The parade route will travel down Main Street to the Rogers intersection. If you would like to enter the parade, contact the Chamber office at 479-754-2340 for a line up number. If you are entering a float and want to be judged please tell the Chamber staff that the entry is for judging. Categories for judging are Business/Industry and Nonprofit and the deadline for entry is Thursday, December 4th at 4:00 p.m. Immediately following the parade, Santa will be visiting the children of all ages at the Court House, handing out bags of candy, and David Clair Photography will be on hand again this year to take your picture with Santa. Regions Bank will be providing popcorn.

Area merchants and individuals are also invited to enter the "Tour of Lights" contest. The contest consist of three categories: Business/Industry, Residential and Nonprofit. Deadline to enter the Lighting contest is Monday, December 1st at 4:00 p.m. Certificates of Award will be given for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in the parade and lighting contests.

The "The Buck Stops Here" campaign implemented in November 2001 is continuing to keep local money local. Every dollar spent in Johnson County turns over an average of 7 times before it leaves the county which enhances the tax base and benefits area schools, roads and services.
