For The
Holidays
Christmas in
Johnson
County
|

|
The
holiday
season
started off with a bang
on the weekend of
November 16th & 17th
with the Merchants
Christmas Open House
where shoppers were not
only treated to great
sales but also
refreshments at most of
the local merchants.
This will continue when
the Annual Early Bird
Sale from 7:00 a.m.
- 10:00 a.m. this
Friday, November 29th so
shop your local
merchants and remember -
"The Buck Stops
Here in Johnson
County.
The
Christmas Lighting
Ceremony was held on
Monday, November 25th.
The normal 6:30 p.m.
start to the festivities
was moved up a bit due
to Ned Perme and
Channel 7 Weather
coming to join us. It
was colder than it had
been for some time but
everyone had a great
time and the hot
chocolate that the
Rotary Club had on hand
helped to keep the cold
bearable! Entertainment
for the evening was
great as the children
from Forester Davis
Pre-school and
Clarksville Schools 2nd
Grade choir sang songs
of the season. The
approximately 200
gathered on the
Courthouse square
anticipating the
countdown to the
lighting of the
Courthouse and Spadra
Bridge, joined in as
County Judge Mike
Jacobs, Clarksville
Mayor Charles Callahan,
Lamar Mayor George
Overbey, Coal Hill Mayor
Ben Yates and Mayor
elect Billy Helms lead
Christmas Carols. Ned
Perme, Channel 7
weatherman, played a
rendition of Silver
Bells on the
keyboard.
Be
sure and come out to the
Annual Christmas
Parade on Saturday,
December 7th at 6:30
p.m. The parade route
will travel down Main
Street to the Rogers
intersection. If you
would like to enter the
parade, contact the
Chamber office at
479-754-2340 for a line
up number. If you are
entering a float and
want to be judged please
tell the Chamber staff
that the entry is for
judging. Categories for
judging are
Business/Industry and
Nonprofit and the
deadline for entry is
Thursday, December 5th
at 4:00 p.m. Immediately
following the parade,
Santa will be visiting
the children of all ages
at the Court House and
handing out bags of
candy.
Area
merchants and
individuals are also
invited to enter the
"Tour of Lights"
contest. The contest
consist of three
categories:
Business/Industry,
Residential and
Nonprofit. Deadline to
enter the Lighting
contest is Monday,
December 2nd at 4:00
p.m. Certificates of
Award will be given for
1st, 2nd, and 3rd place
in the parade and
lighting
contests.
"The
Buck Stops
Here"
This
campaign implemented in
November 2001 is
continuing to keep local
money local. Every
dollar spent in Johnson
County turns over an
average of 7 times
before it leaves the
county which enhances
the tax base and
benefits area schools,
roads and services.
The following
merchants have
participated in this
season's campaign so
be sure to shop at home
for all of your gift
needs, catering and
party
planning!

Johnson
County First
In
State
to ACE
Certify
For
the first time in the state's
history, a county has
earned the Arkansas County of
Excellence (ACE) distinction.
Governor Mike Huckabee
awarded ACE certification to
Johnson County in a ceremony held
October 29th at the U of O in
Clarksville. A large crowd
watched as Governor Huckabee
presented County Judge Mike
Jacobs with the ACE award. This
3-year effort of the Chamber
involved 5 communities in Johnson
County - Clarksville, Lamar,
Knoxville, Hartman and Coal Hill
- and hundreds of people. At
least 15 committees addressed
issues such as established
business and industry, commercial
development, tourism, retiree
relocation, education, workforce
development, law enforcement fire
protection, health care and
community beautification. The
Governor was quoted as saying,
"We're glad to have this model
for other cooperative efforts
across the state."
