Arts Cooperative

A subcommittee of the Central Business District Development Committee is working on an exciting idea. We are exploring the creation of an Artists' Cooperative/Fine Arts Guild for area artists and have a great location downtown if details can be worked out. Your help is needed.

The first step is identifying those artists who might be interested in a place to display, sell, or teach their arts, in a space/lease sharing arrangement. Artists working in any medium - oils, watercolors, sculpture, stained glass, art woodwork, or others - are asked to call the Chamber office. Also, there is a real need for art framing service. Chamber members are asked to help by calling in the names of artists we can contact.

The next step will be an open meeting with area artists to survey potential interest. Friends and patrons of the arts are also invited to help in planning and execution of this project, which will serve to showcase the work of area artists, help bring tourists to our area and new life to our downtown, and enhance the quality of life for all residents.

Please call 754-2340 or stop by the Chamber office at 101 N. Johnson Street as soon as possible with names or suggestions, if you would like to help.

239th Family Support Group

The families of our local National Guard unit, the 239th Engineer Company, have formed a support group that included the Send-Off Celebration that was held last Saturday evening at Metheny Field. Support Group Chairperson Caitlin Robinson and the ladies of the Steering Committee worked diligently decorating on Saturday - first outside, then inside when the rain started, and moving it back outside when the sky cleared. Approximately 80 Johnson County residents are involved in the mobilization.

Jim Pat Mills, Governor appointed Commissioner of the Arkansas State Veterans Commission and Board of Directors appointed Group Trustee for the 239th Family Support Group, has a primary job to raise funds, and to date has raised over $5,000. The goal of $15,000 will be used for emergency funds to help the families left behind while their spouse has been deployed. Clarksville Light & Water, Arkansas Western Gas and Wal-Mart Distribution Center will be assisting as needed with utility, grocery and supplies help.

The families of these men as well as Jim Pat Mills is most grateful and proud of the help received to date. If you or your business would like to make a donation, please make your tax deductible donation check payable to the 239th Family Support Group and mail to Jim Pat Mills, Group Trustee, PO Box 547, Clarksville, AR 72830.

CLARKSVILLE FRATERNAL ORDER OF THE EAGLES BULLETIN

 November, 2003 - Issue 4

I would like to thank each member of our Eagles and Lady Eagles for all the help in making our Halloween Festival a great Success! We definitely put in a few hours on this project and made it work. At times I know that we had to put our lives on hold to pull this off. The good news is that it was a great success and will be even a greater one next year!

We would also like to thank Mr. & Mrs. Leon Peden for being so gracious and allowing us to use the Peden Building for this function. Leon is a Charter Member of our organization and we are inviting him to dinner on us at the Catfish House on Thursday, November 20th at 6:00 pm. A Joint Meeting will follow at 7 pm and we would like each and every Member to attend if they can to give the Peden's a warm hand.

We made a profit of about $1500 in the 3 day Festival and have a start on our building fund. I hope that more of our Members can be available to help on the next project cause they are really missing out on a lot of fun! I personally want to thank all the Lady Eagles, future Junior Eagles and the College students and Johnson County residents who helped us through out the month.

I would also like to thank our Community for showing up at the event and hope they come next year when we will have a much more organized and fun Festival. Thank You All!

Harley E. Mulanax

New Meeting Times

The Eagles and the Lady Eagles have set new meeting times for their perspective groups. Both groups will meet at the Chamber on a bi-weekly schedule at 7:00 pm; men have a set schedule for the 2nd and 4th Mondays of each month, ladies will meet on the 1st and 3rd Mondays of each month. We are very busy and the Lady Eagles have a good idea about meeting weekly twice a month for a meeting and refreshment on the days the Chamber is tied up also. (No meeting on Monday, November 24 - please attend the Christmas Lighting Ceremony on the Courthouse Square at 6:30 p.m. and show your support for our community!

The last Sunday evening of each month, we will have a Dinner and Joint Meeting with the location to be placed in the Bulletin. This month, we will meet at the Catfish House at 6 pm for those that wish to eat and will have the meeting after so that we can share information between the ladies and the men about what we have planned for the up coming month. This meeting will be informal and no business will be conducted there.

Please attend these meetings! They are very important to our Chapter and we need your valuable input!

We need more new Charter Members! The Men are half way to the goal of 50 members before we can apply for our Charter! The Ladies are very close behind and we all need to work on finding good people to join us. So take an application with you everywhere!
