from the
Mayor
Coal Hill is located in the Arkansas
River Valley between the Ozarks and the
Ouachita Mountains. The Valley
contains fertile soil, scenic beauty, and
good transportation routes. It is almost
equally distant from the much larger
cities of Fort Smith to the west and
Russellville to the east. Highway 64 runs
directly through the center of town.
Interstate 40 runs 5 miles to the
north.
Originally
a coal mining and farming community, most
people now travel to nearby communities
for work. Although if you travel south of
town you will find farms growing cotton,
soybeans, and corn; if you travel north
you will find numerous cattle and poultry
farms.
The
Coal Hill Wampus Cats and the Hartman
Hawks consolidated schools in 1983 to
become the Johnson County Westside Rebels.
Students are active in baseball, softball,
track, band, football, and basketball as
well as numerous educational pursuits.
Because it is a small school, there is a
closeness among the students and faculty
that doesn't exist in larger
schools.
Due
to the geography and climate of the area,
people enjoy a wide variety of outdoor
leisure time activities such as hunting,
fishing, hiking, camping, and many other
outdoor sports.
Located
in the Bible Belt insures that the town
has churches of most denominations that
also play a large part in the small town
community atmosphere.
